The Canal du Midi, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is one of the engineering marvels of the 17th century. Built by Pierre-Paul Riquet, it connects the Mediterranean Sea to the Garonne, thus providing a waterway link between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean. This iconic canal offers a multitude of captivating routes for navigation and cycling enthusiasts, traversing varied landscapes and historic towns.

1. Toulouse - Carcassonne Route:

This segment is one of the most popular, offering an immersion into Occitan history and culture. Starting from Toulouse, the "Pink City," you will pass through charming villages like Ramonville and Villefranche-de-Lauragais. Carcassonne, with its beautifully preserved medieval city, is a highlight of this route. The journey takes about 3 to 4 days by boat, with stops to discover local treasures.

2. Carcassonne - Béziers:

This stretch is renowned for its vineyard landscapes and impressive works of art. As you navigate, you will pass through Trèbes, Lézignan-Corbières, and Homps, villages where time seems to have stood still. Béziers, the birthplace of Pierre-Paul Riquet, is famous for its Fonserannes locks, a masterpiece of river architecture. This route is ideal for a week of relaxation and discovery.

3. Béziers - Sète:

This final segment leads travelers towards the Mediterranean Sea, through the magnificent expanse of the Thau Lagoon. Along the way, you will discover towns like Agde, with its volcanic charm, and Marseillan, famous for its muscat. Crossing the Thau Lagoon, with its oyster farms, offers a unique experience before reaching Sète, a lively and cultural port city.

4. Cycling Route:

The Canal du Midi has a greenway along its banks, ideal for cyclists. Cycling routes allow you to discover the canal at a different pace, with flexible stops. Cyclists can easily explore local markets, vineyards, and historical sites along the way. The Toulouse-Sète stretch by bike takes about 4 to 6 days, depending on the pace and chosen stops.
